How long does gilded artwork last?

The short answer is: indefinitely, if the underlayer is sound and the environment is stable.

Genuine 24ct gold does not tarnish, corrode, or degrade under normal conditions.

Byzantine icons gilded a thousand years ago still have their gold leaf surfaces where the base layers have remained intact. This durability contributes to the appeal of gold leaf as an artistic material.

What actually determines longevity

The gold itself is not the limiting factor in the lifespan of a gilded work.

In a traditional gesso panel, the gesso is a chalk and glue mixture that can respond to humidity changes by expanding and contracting. Over time, in unstable environments, this can cause the gesso to crack or the gold leaf to flake. These cracks are irreversible.

Wood panels, which are the traditional support for gilded work in the Byzantine tradition, require specific conditions to remain stable.

Humidity fluctuations are the main risk, so displaying the piece in a stable indoor environment, away from exterior walls, heating vents, and direct sunlight, is the appropriate setting.

The difference from imitation gilt

Imitation gold leaf is made from base metals like brass or copper alloys that oxidise over time.

Tarnishing in imitation gilt surfaces typically becomes visible within years to decades, depending on the environment and the quality of the varnish applied over the surface.

Genuine gold leaf does not tarnish.

This is why it's very important to know what materials have been used in a gilded artwork before acquiring it.

What care is required

Stable humidity and temperature, indirect natural or artificial light, and no cleaning liquid of any kind, including water should be used to dust off the surface.

Instead, use a soft dry brush or a clean swiffer.

If the piece can be framed behind glass, that will keep it intact for much longer.

Any other cleaning or conservation work should be carried out by a specialist if necessary.

In David Roman's art, the lasting nature of gold is part of the deeper theme within the body of work, linking contemporary concerns around human value to artistic traditions that have survived across centuries.
