How do you display gold paintings at home?
Gold paintings vs conventional paintings
When displaying a gold painting, the main focus is light.
More than almost any other category of painting, genuine gold leaf work changes significantly depending on how and from where it is illuminated from, which means that where you hang a gold painting matters more than where you hang most other work.
Understanding how gold leaf interacts with light
The appearance of gold leaf shifts depending on the angle between the viewer, the light source, and the surface of the work.
Under soft daylight coming from the front, the surface reads as broadly golden.
Under angled light, it can shift between deep orange-gold and near-white, and in low light paired with a soft warm light source, it can create a magical athmosphere in the room.
Position and environment
Placing the gold painting where it receives soft natural light throughout the day is the best position to display it in.
Directional artificial lighting (a track light or adjustable picture light positioned at an angle to the work) allows more of the surface character to be seen than a flat, overhead source.
Direct sunlight should be avoided, so it doesn't impact the underlayers of any additional paint used alongside the gold (if there is any).
Beyond light, the another key consideration is the humidity of the space.
Avoid exterior walls where temperatures fluctuate significantly, heating vents that create dry conditions, and bathrooms or kitchens where humidity varies.
A stable indoor environment, away from direct sunlight, is where these works perform best both visually and in terms of longevity.
Consider the size of the painting vs scale of the room
A large gold painting will dominate a room. A smaller piece will create an interesting focus point.
Both require that the position and lighting are considered before installation.
Avoid displaying a gold painting where it's overbearing, where it gets lost, or where the light conditions suppress its reflective qualities.
In David Roman's art, genuine gold leaf forms part of a broader conversation between ancient traditions and contemporary concerns. Gilded surfaces and symbolic elements are used to explore questions of human value in a culture that increasingly measures people through the productivity and data that can be extracted from them.
