Is it safe to buy fine art online?

Trust in the digital art space

Buying fine art online is increasingly common, but safety depends on transparency and the integrity of the source. When purchasing directly from an artist or a reputable online art gallery, the process can be just as secure (if not more so) than buying in person. The vast majority of online fine art purchases from reputable sources complete without any problem.

What makes an art seller trustworthy

The most reliable source for fine art online is an artist's own studio website or direct sales platform. The documentation is first-hand, there is no intermediary to assess separately, and any questions about the work go directly to the person who made it. A gallery with a documented physical presence and a consistent, verifiable roster is also reliable. A curated platform that requires documentation from its sellers and has a clear editorial standard is a further option.

The sources that require more caution are anonymous marketplace listings and works with minimal or absent documentation. It's not because good work can't appear in unexpected places, but because without a verifiable source there is no basis on which to trust the information being provided.

The documentation that makes an art purchase safe

For a direct studio purchase, the minimum is: a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist, a clear materials record, and the artist's signature on the work with their direct contact details. These should be offered proactively rather than needing to be requested.

What residual risk looks like and how to handle it

The main risk with buying fine art online is that the work could arrive looking different from how it was described, or worse - damaged. A clear returns policy covering condition on arrival will manage this. With this in place, the risk of an online fine art purchase from a reliable source is reduced to the same risks of any other online transaction.

David Roman’s studio created and ships all art purchases from Birmingham, UK, packaged securely for safe arrival. If a work arrives damaged, collectors have a 10 day period to get in touch with the studio and return the work. In over a decade of selling art online, only one print has arrived damaged and a replacement was sent to the collector.
