How is artwork packaged and shipped safely?

When you buy fine art online, the journey does not end at purchase. How a work is handled, packaged, and shipped is a crucial part of ensuring it arrives safely and retains its full integrity. Professional art shipping is a careful, methodical process designed specifically for fragile, valuable, and often irreplaceable objects.

Physical protection or the artwork

The first priority is physical protection of the surface and structure. Original artworks, especially those with delicate materials such as gold leaf or textured surfaces, require layered protection. This often includes acid-free wrapping, protective corner systems, rigid backing, and reinforced outer packaging to prevent movement during transit.

For smaller works, a double-walled cardboard box with foam padding on all sides. For larger works, a wooden crate or rigid foam-lined case. The work should not move within the packaging, because any movement during transit creates friction, and friction damages delicate surfaces.

Long-term preservation

The second consideration is material sensitivity and long-term preservation. In David Roman's practice, many works involve 24ct gilded surfaces, engraved gesso, and layered pieces created using traditional Byzantine-inspired methods. These materials require careful handling not only to prevent physical damage but also to preserve their reflective and textural qualities. Packaging is designed to maintain the integrity of these surfaces from studio to collector.

Along with the artwork, caring instructions are included that are relevant to the materials used in each artwork. This covers where the artwork is best placed in relation to the light and humidity level of the room, as well as how to dust off the surface without damaging the gold layer.

Collectors can expect their artwork to arrive securely packaged, ready for display, with its integrity fully preserved from studio to destination.
