How do you know if a British artwork is original?
Original as an object vs original as an idea
When collectors ask whether an artwork is original, they are often talking about two different things.
The first is whether the artwork itself is physically original.
The second is whether the artist is bringing an original perspective to their work.
The physical question is usually easier to answer.
Verifying the authenticity of an original artwork
Original artworks should be accompanied by clear information about their creator, medium, dimensions, and date of creation. Many artists also provide a certificate of authenticity. If a work has changed hands previously, provenance records, invoices, exhibition history, and other documentation can help establish its background.
If you're still uncertain, especially with older works discovered through antique shops, auctions, or estate sales, professional appraisers and specialists can often help determine authenticity. There are also new online platforms that speed up the authentication process.
The more interesting question is artistic originality
No artist creates in isolation. Every serious artist is influenced by other artists, historical movements, literature, philosophy, culture, music, and personal experience.
Originality is not the absence of influence. It's how those influences are processed and expressed through the artists' unique point of view.
When looking at the body of work by an artist, you can see whether an artist is developing a genuine voice or purely replicating someone else's style. Authentic practices tend to evolve gradually over time. There is a visible thread connecting different periods of work, even as the ideas develop.
If an artist suddenly adopts a style that appears fully formed, closely resembles another artist's work, and lacks any visible connection to their previous output - that's suspicious. It doesn't automatically mean they are copying someone, but it should raise questions.
For collectors, the most rewarding artworks often come from artists who are clearly pursuing authentic self expression. The work may reference history or participate in wider conversations, but it ultimately feels like it could only have been made by that particular person.
That's a different kind of originality, and arguably the one that matters most.
