How to support your regional art scene
Supporting your regional art scene does not always mean making a large purchase. Buying work directly from an artist is one of the most powerful forms of support, but it is not the only one.
The easiest way to support is by showing up
Attend open studios, exhibitions, art trails, talks, launches, degree shows and artist-led events in your area.
These events often take more time, money and energy to organise than people realise. Artists may have paid for materials, framing, photography, transport, promotion, venue costs or display equipment before anyone walks through the door. When people attend, the event has life around it, and opportunities start appearing.
Small purchases also matter
A print, merch, catalogue, postcard, small work on paper or limited edition may not transform an artist’s finances, but it contributes towards the cost of staying in businesses.
Even when someone is not ready to buy a larger original, a smaller sale can help an artist leave an event feeling that the effort was worthwhile rather than another financial loss.
Be the relationship broker
Recommendations are another important form of support. If you see an artist whose work would suit a friend’s home, a business interior, a hotel, a restaurant, an interior designer, a collector or a local cultural project, make the introduction. These opportunities created through word of mouth are priceless for the artists.
You can also support artists by joining their mailing lists, sharing their work thoughtfully, attending studio sales, or commissioning pieces.
Regional art scenes are built by participation. Artists can make the work, but they cannot create a culture around it alone.
A strong local art scene needs visitors, buyers, advocates, venues, writers, collectors and the wider public.
