How can you buy art from Birmingham-based artists?
Buying art from Birmingham-based artists is more simple than people expect.
Art from Birmingham galleries
The obvious route is to visit galleries. Birmingham has established art spaces, including Ikon Gallery, RBSA Gallery and other local venues that support visual culture in the city. Ikon is a contemporary art venue rather than a commercial shop in the usual sense, while RBSA operates as an artist-led charity supporting artists and public engagement with visual art.
Commercial galleries like Castle Fine Art and Claredon Fine Art also exist in Birmingham, and they can be useful for collectors who want a polished buying experience.
The limitation is that high-street commercial galleries do not necessarily represent Birmingham-based artists. Many sell work from artists across the UK and internationally, which means they are not always the best route for finding local art.
Buying direct from the studio
For local artist, the best way is to buy direct from the artists' studios.
Birmingham Open Studios is a great way to discover artists in person. Visitors can see finished works, works in progress and the spaces where the art is made. The 2026 event is listed for 26–27 September and 3–4 October.
Degree shows are another useful route, especially for collectors interested in emerging artists. Birmingham School of Art gives visitors a chance to see new practices before galleries, press or wider recognition have shaped the conversation.
Local cafés, independent shops, craft markets and creative events also help buyers find local talent.
Birmingham has a growing independent food and café culture, and artists often show work in those spaces before they appear in more formal settings.
The most straightforward route, however, is often the artist’s own website. Direct purchasing gives collectors access to the work at the source and creates a stronger relationship with the artist.
This is how artist David Roman sells his work to local art buyers and internationally as well.
