Created over three months, finished with gold leaf.
The original Alchemist began as a painting with relief detail built up over nearly three months, then gilded in 24-carat gold leaf against the blackest black paint.
At its centre, a fragmented figure sits between two worlds, one organic, one artificial. Rather than choosing sides, the figure takes the stance of an alchemist - someone who uses even the most diffcult circumstances as an opportunity to transform their consciousness.
This edition recreates that surface with raised relief printing, silkscreen and hand-applied imitation gold leaf.

About the artist
David Roman is an artist based in Birmingham, UK.
His work gives form to archetypal figures and the inner journeys they stand for, using gold leaf, relief and traditional icon-making processes to make contemporary icons of inner transformation. He has exhibited in the UK, the US and Romania.
